Introduction to point-of-care ultrasound workshops

Introduction to point-of-care ultrasound workshops

The RACGP > Faculties > RACGP Rural > Rural education and training > Continuing professional development (CPD) > Introduction to point-of-care ultrasound for rural GPs

Led by expert rural doctors and sonographers

Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is transforming clinical decision-making in rural general practice.

With limited access to specialist services, and portable ultrasound devices becoming more powerful, affordable, and accessible than ever, GPs now have an exciting opportunity to enhance diagnostic confidence and patient care through practical, hands‑on use of point‑of‑care ultrasound in everyday practice.

This full‑day introductory workshop is designed for GPs and registrars with little or no prior experience in point‑of‑care ultrasound (POCUS). It provides a practical introduction to the role of POCUS in the diagnostic process, focusing on core concepts, basic image acquisition, and ultrasound applications commonly used in general practice.

Led by experienced rural clinicians and sonographers, the workshop explores key POCUS applications in a supportive learning environment, with a strong emphasis on hands‑on practice. You will use Butterfly iQ+ handheld ultrasound devices, provided by our equipment partner, Big Green.

At the end of this workshop, you will be able to:

  1. Apply the Extended Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma (eFAST) protocol for trauma assessment.
  2. Apply compression ultrasound to assess for the presence of deep vein thrombosis.
  3. Interpret ultrasound images to differentiate cellulitis and abscess.
  4. Perform intravenous line placement under safe ultrasound guidance.
  5. Identify features of a viable intrauterine pregnancy using first trimester transabdominal obstetric ultrasound
  6. Conduct a basic, systematic ultrasound assessment of the heart.

“This is amazing and I hope to see more of it. Thank you very much to all concerned, particularly the mix of sonographers and clinicians with primary care focus was really, really good. They were local so now we have more connections in our own workforce.”

“I learnt so much in such a short period of time being a complete novice. There was enough time for each participant to practice and also observe others which reinforced the learning.”

“I feel more confident in just grabbing the probe and giving it a go. Even the basics, like knobology and depth adjustment, are helpful to those of us who weren't raised with ready access to POCUS”.

“Wonderful sonographers who were exceptional teachers and provided interactive learning opportunities. A great course for rural GPs.”

“Ultrasound scanning should be taught to every GP”

“Well organised and relevant to GPs. I was given an appropriate amount of information to get started with ultrasound”
