Dr Ian

I’m a Sydney boy who has only ever done a 2 week locum in the big smoke. My life and profession are heavily entwined. Despite now working in Tamworth in a 17 doctor training practice that I founded, my favourite size community is 1500-3000 people with hospital rights and the full scope of rural practice. I have worked throughout rural Victoria and NSW and have been privileged to be in a number of leadership roles that include GPSA, RDAA, RDA NSW, AMA and also ACRRM. I have been on the boards of the Local health service as well as GP training bodies, including the final chair of GP Synergy. My heart as always been in enthusing the next generation in rural practice.

I consider myself a rural doctor. Aging, but not as old as my senior counterparts and mentors who led the way in developing rural medicine and rural generalism as a separate discipline. I founded what is now a large teaching practice in Tamworth, NSW.

My attraction was not only to general practice, but it had to be rural. This was always my pathway through medicine. Probably due to the variety and the ability to develop long lasting relationships with patients.

Despite being a city boy, I fell in love with a country girl at university. The expansion of the desire to provide care to an individual over time was rapidly supplanted by the ability to provide care to communities as a whole over time.

The patients and the day-to-day variety.

Having colleagues come up to introduce themselves and shake my hand such is the power of social media.

To ensure that the RACGP continues to advocate for the needs of rural doctors and the communities in which they work. To support new rural doctors, both new graduates and those that have moved here from overseas thrive in rural Australia.
