The Doctors for Women in Rural Medicine (DWRM) Committee aims to elevate, empower and encourage women working in rural practice by working to identify and meet their unique interests, challenges and needs and empower them to reach their full professional capacity, in turn supporting rural communities.

Dr Christie Rodda is a small town rural GP in Beechworth in north east Victoria. She loves the diverse roles  her job provides, including after-hours service, caring for inpatients in the local hospital, working in a regional emergency department and local prison, supervising registrars and advocating for rural communities. She is passionate about the role of General Practice in the health system and in her spare time can be found coaching kids' mountain biking and exploring the Victorian High Country with her family.

Facilitated by Dr Catriona Melville, this session explores how women's health has been provided during the pandemic and the ongoing services offered through telehealth and the like. It also looks into the ongoing uses of contraception and medical termination in rural and remote communities. Watch and earn two CPD points.

This meet-up covers some of the key professional and personal options available to women working in rural medicine, from family considerations to career streams and special interests, general practice pathways, grants, community engagement and more.

This member meet-up discusses RACGP's new gender inclusive Doctors for Women in Rural Medicine Committee which aims to elevate, empower and encourage women working in rural practice. You’ll also hear directly from two GPs who will share their stories of working in rural general practice, including the benefits and the challenges.

Doctors for Women in Rural Medicine member meet-up: Changing the narrative

With an introduction by RACGP Board Chair Dr Lara Roeske, hear sixth year JCU medical student Curtis Rayment share the details of his evidence-based program ‘It’s a Man’s Issue’, which challenges young men to get involved in the conversation around toxic masculinity, sexual assault and increasing understanding of consent.  Delivered to more than 3000 students and young sports club members so far, ‘It’s a Man’s Issue’ recently garnered support from Project Speak Up!, a non-profit organisation committed to preventing domestic and sexual violence in Townsville.

Doctors for Women in Rural Medicine member meet-up: Living and working through natural disasters

Hear from guest speaker Dr Sara Renwick-Lau, a GP currently living and working in Mallacoota in Victoria. Sara joined the Mallacoota Medical Centre in 2008 and has at times been the sole doctor in town. She also experienced and continued working through the bushfires of 2019–20, which deeply affected Mallacoota and nearby areas. Come and hear about her experiences living and working through natural disasters, which are affecting more and more Australian communities.

Dr Hilton Koppe presents the workshop: Reflective Writing for Clinician Wellbeing.

Hilton is a writer, educator, podcaster and doctor living on Bundjalung Land on the east coast of Australia.Hilton facilitates reflective writing workshops for doctors and other health professionals with the goal of deepening their compassion, overcoming professional isolation and reducing risk of burnout. The workshops have been adapted for people living with chronic and mental illnesses, as well as enthusiastic amateur writers. Hilton has been invited to present his workshops all the way from Byron Writers Festival to Harvard Medical School.

Hilton’s book, One Curious Doctor: A Memoir of Medicine, Migration and Mortality, explores the personal impact of working as a country doctor. 

Come join us for a fun-filled session of wordplay and gentle writing exercises in a safe supportive space.

This special online event will be hosted by Doctors for Women in Rural Medicine Chair, Dr Christie Rodda, and we’re excited to be joined by Professor Helena Teede AM for a keynote address. Helena heads up the now International Women in Leadership training program and the “Advancing Women in Healthcare and Health and Medical Research Leadership” initiative funded by the Australian Government’s National Health Medical Research Council with 23 partners. She is passionate about advancing the careers of women to enable them to have influence and impact
