Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) and the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (ACRRM) change to the Queensland AGPT semester dates, effective from semester 1, 2027.
From 2027.1, Qld AGPT semester dates will align with the rest of Australia. This allows alignment with national AGPT timelines as well as hospital registrar employment term dates. This change is designed to benefit registrars, supervisors, practices, hospitals—and ultimately the Queensland community.
Why this change?
- Better alignment: From 2027.1, AGPT semesters will align with Queensland hospital registrar contract end dates, removing the current two-week overlap and ensuring registrars start GP training at the same time as their peers.
- Improved wellbeing:
- For registrars: More time to relocate during off-peak periods and increased opportunities for annual leave at semester end, aligning with holidays and the festive season.
- For supervisors: Greater flexibility to take leave during school holidays (January and July), supporting mental health and enabling focused supervision during peak placement periods.
- National consistency: Aligning Queensland with national AGPT timeframes will streamline communications, placement processes, Medicare provider number applications, and exam scheduling.
This change means that semester 2, 2026 will be 28 weeks in length, however it will not extend the overall training time for registrars.
