Ms Sarah Bresnehan
She was co-opted to join the Council in late 2023 as the Medical Student Representative
Find out more about her.
I first learnt about the RACGP Medical Student Representative position following some incidental involvement in a project another representative was completing interstate. This motivated me to reach out the RACGP Queensland Faculty Council to see if a position was available to apply for in Queensland.
I am someone who has entered medicine with a strong motivation to pursue General Practice as my specialty of choice. I see this role on the Council as a fantastic opportunity to not only learn more about the field, but to also act as a voice on behalf of medical students and discover how I can help further foster an interest in the specialty amongst my peers.
.
My first goal for 2024 is to network with other RACGP Medical Student Representatives across other states to establish how the medical student representative role can best suit the needs of the Faculty Council’s across Australia.
Secondly, a personal goal is to ensure I clearly represent the interests and perspectives of medical students to the Council. An understanding of training pathways, support and solutions from colleges and perception of the field among peers and professionals are some aspects medical students may consider when looking at entering general practice in a few years’ time. I hope my involvement in the General Practice Students Network (GPSN) as the immediate past National Chair and incoming National Vice Chair for 2024 has equipped me with the skills to add value and insight to the Council
I entered medicine wanting to become a GP. The continuity of care and broad scope of practice has always appealed to me. What has been interesting to learn in these past few years though is that despite its generalist nature, general practice also provides fantastic opportunities to develop areas of interest. A burgeoning passion of mine is skin cancer medicine and dermatological surgery. During my placements I have been able to witness the importance of early detection and patient health literacy on safe sun exposure. This is something I hope to further explore if I am to (hopefully) enter general practice in years to come.
I used to be Australian National Champion for Artistic Roller Skating! I did give it up a few years back though so I can’t say how effortless I would be on a pair of skates now.
