The Redfern Statement and Redfern Alliance
The Redfern Statement was released during the 2016 Federal Election campaign on 9 June 2016 by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leaders from the health, justice, children and families, disability, and family violence prevention sectors.
The Statement is an urgent call for a more just approach to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs. It provides a range of practical solutions by which the Federal Government can improve health, early childhood, justice, violence prevention, early childhood and disability outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
The Redfern Statement is supported by more than 30 major organisations, including the RACGP.
On 14 February 2017 the members of the Redfern Statement alliance, led by the National Congress of Australia’s First People presented the Redfern Statement to Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull at Parliament House.
Throughout 2017, five sector specific workshops were run as part of the engagement process between the Commonwealth Government and the members of the Redfern Statement Alliance. The sector workshops were Disability, Child Development & Safety & Wellbeing, Health, Justice/Violence Prevention, and Housing. As a culmination of this process, the Redfern Statement Ministerial Forum was held on 17 August 2017 at Parliament House.
