About the Growing Strong award

The Growing Strong award is aimed at supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander registrars, complements the RACGP’s existing Standing Strong Together award and is open to Fellows or an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person working towards improving health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Through the generous donation of Dr Nathan Pinskier and Mrs Susan Pinskier, RACGP Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health have established the ’Growing Strong award’. The award was established in 2017 was established to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander GP registrars during the early stages of their GP career.

The award is presented to the recipient each year at the RACGP’s annual conference, with the recipient receiving support to attend the conference (including airfares, accommodation and registration), with all residual funding going towards the recipient’s examination fees.

The first recipient of the Growing Strong award (2017) was Dr Josie Guyer. Dr Guyer embarked on studying medicine in 2009, after a long-established career in nursing. Her lifelong intention is to work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people where she hopes to make a difference to health outcomes and contribute to ‘closing the gap.’ She considers it a privilege to be an Indigenous doctor.
