Introducing the sixth edition Standards for general practices

A contemporary framework for quality care

Over the past decade, general practice has adapted to significant changes in the health landscape, from the rapid rise of digital health technologies and artificial intelligence, to evolving expectations around climate change, privacy, and data security.

As the primary point of care for communities across Australia, general practice continues to lead through these changes with a focus on safety, continuity, and patient-centred care.

The sixth edition Standards has been developed to reflect this changing environment. As with every edition over the three decades, the RACGP has worked closely with the profession and wider sector to ensure the Standards remain practical, relevant, and informed by evidence. More than 18 months of consultation has shaped this edition, resulting in a framework that supports safe, high-quality care across practices of all sizes and models.

A practical, outcome-focused framework

This edition maintains a strong focus on outcomes rather than prescribing specific processes. It gives general practices the flexibility to identify and implement systems that work in their own context, while maintaining a clear and robust foundation for safe, high-quality care.

Key updates include:

  • environmental sustainability criteria, with simple and achievable steps for practices to reduce their environmental impact while meeting growing public health and community expectations
  • dedicated criteria addressing artificial intelligence and supporting safe and responsible adoption of digital tools
  • enhanced focus on privacy and confidentiality, particularly in the context of expanding digital health capabilities
  • antimicrobial stewardship, including team and patient education to support appropriate prescribing
  • a strengthened approach to continuous quality improvement, including the use of clinical data, patient feedback, and environmental initiatives.

Designed for clarity and usability

The RACGP has worked to improve the usability and accessibility of the Standards, particularly for practices undertaking accreditation. The sixth edition includes clear language and practical examples to support real-world implementation. A suite of supporting resources, including webinars, FAQs, and best-practice guides, will help GPs and teams translate the Standards into day-to-day practice.

Strengthening the profession’s leadership

Accreditation against the Standards remains a clear demonstration of a practice’s commitment to quality, safety, and accountability. It offers assurance not only to patients, but also to governments and the broader health sector, that general practice is delivering contemporary, evidence-based care.
