Artificial intelligence and the sixth edition Standards

Innovation with care at the centre

We’re living through a time of remarkable change in healthcare, and AI is at the forefront of that transformation.

We’re living through a time of remarkable change in healthcare, and AI is at the forefront of that transformation. In general practice, we’re already seeing the impact of AI tools – from scribing technology that reduces administrative burden to decision support systems that have potential to enhance diagnosis and treatment.

The sixth edition Standards recognises this shift and takes a forward-thinking approach by introducing dedicated AI criteria. If and when practices choose to adopt AI technologies, the Standards highlight that they do so safely, ethically, and with the best interests of patients and communities in mind.

Practices using AI tools are asked to:

  • have clear policies and risk management strategies in place
  • seek patient consent and prioritise privacy
  • always maintain clinical oversight
  • ensure technology supports – rather than replaces – human judgement.

The Standards provide a framework to support these safeguards, and the RACGP is here to guide practices through the responsible adoption of AI and other digital health tools. Our position statement on AI in primary care and supporting guidance help practices navigate this evolving space, with practical advice on integrating AI into everyday care.

As we move forward, we encourage practices to approach AI thoughtfully and collaboratively, ensuring that any tools used are enhancing care – not complicating it.
