General practice accreditation in Australia: 2022

Summary

Summary

Accreditation of Australian general practice is important for assuring and improving the quality and safety of healthcare. In Australia, general practice accreditation is voluntary and the RACGP has developed general practice standards for more than 30 years. This paper describes the state of general practice accreditation in Australia as of 2022 and is a supplement to our report General practice accreditation in Australia: Data from 2010–2021.

The information presented in this report is based on quantitative analysis of the primary and community health data provided as part of the Australian Government’s Productivity Commission 2023 Report on government services (RoGS).

We found that:
  • as of 2022, there are 7219 accredited practices nationally – more than any previous year and 327 more than the previous peak of 6892 in 2020
  • the numbers of accredited practices has increased in all states and territories except for the Northern Territory
  • market share between two of the four accreditation agencies that provide independent general practice accreditation* is reasonably consistent in 2022 with the period 2013–2020.

* While there are four accreditation agencies that currently offer general practice accreditation, the two newer agencies are not providing a high volume of assessments and are not included in the RoGS data.
