High-quality health records
Last revised: 17 Jun 2020
The RACGP has three key resources on the topic of data quality, available to view and download on the RACGP website:
Improving health record quality in general practice: How to create and maintain health records that are fit for purpose The RACGP has developed a guide to help general practices produce and maintain high-quality health records that are fit for purpose. Published in 2018, Improving health record quality in general practice presents six attributes of high-quality health records, and provides guidance on how practices can achieve these, including how to set up a health record system that facilitates the production of high-quality health records. Tips and case studies are included throughout to give practical information about how to apply the principles discussed.
Standards for general practices, 5th edition The RACGP’s Standards for general practices detail accreditation requirements for general practices, to support general practice staff to identify and address gaps in their systems and processes. Now in its fifth edition, the Standards aim to protect patients from harm by improving the quality and safety of health services. The Standards include benchmarks pertaining to the contents of health records and how they should be updated. They detail activities for ensuring a practice’s records contain an accurate and comprehensive record of all interactions with patients.
Practice Incentives Program Quality Improvement Incentive (PIP QI) fact sheet The Australian Government introduced the PIP QI in August 2019. This scheme is designed to reward general practices for their participation in quality improvement activities in conjunction with their local Primary Health Networks (PHNs). The RACGP has developed a fact sheet to assist GPs and general practices who wish to participate in the program by explaining the eligibility requirements, payment details, and technical matters related to data extraction.
