New items from 1 November 2019

From 1 November 2019, four new MBS items for attendance via video conference by a general practitioner will be introduced for patients in rural and remote areas.

Professional attendance by video conference by a general practitioner for an obvious problem characterised by the straightforward nature of the task that requires a short patient history and, if required, limited examination and management, only if:

  • the patient is not an admitted patient; and
  • the patient is located within a Modified Monash 6 area or a Modified Monash 7 area; and
  • at the time of the attendance, the patient and the medical practitioner are at least 15 km by road from each other; and
  • the patient has received 3 face-to-face professional attendances from that practitioner in the preceding 12 months.

Professional attendance by video conference by a general practitioner (other than a service to which another item applies), lasting less than 20 minutes and including any of the following that are clinically relevant:

  • taking a patient history;
  • performing a clinical examination;
  • arranging any necessary investigation;
  • implementing a management plan;
  • providing appropriate preventive health care;

for one or more health-related issues, with appropriate documentation—only if:

  • the patient is not an admitted patient; and
  • the patient is located within a Modified Monash 6 area or a Modified Monash 7 area; and
  • at the time of the attendance, the patient and the medical practitioner are at least 15 km by road from each other; and
  • the patient has received 3 face-to-face professional attendances from that practitioner in the preceding 12 months.
