Referring to other medical specialists
The RACGP has developed Referring to other medical specialists: A guide for ensuring good referral outcomes for your patients to support GPs when referring to other medical specialists.

This resource provides guidance on how to choose a specialist, inform patients of cost, the MBS rules for referrals, the content of referrals, the use of secure electronic communication and expectations when referring to other medical specialists.

The guide also provides examples of how to communicate the purpose or intent of a referral to another medical specialist, including outlines of the different types of referrals used in general practice and how these should be structured.
