Managing emergencies and disasters in general practice
Module 1 – Prevention and preparedness
It is critical to understand what you and your team can do to psychologically prepare for an event, from the onset of the emergency or disaster all the way through to the recovery phase and perhaps further.
Having a good understanding of what to expect during and after a disaster can assist in decreasing people’s anxiety levels. People who are psychologically prepared for a disaster are generally more confident and able to make effective decisions regarding their emergency management plans.10
The Australian Psychological Society’s information sheet on Preparing for natural disasters outlines the importance of being psychologically prepared and provides some steps you and your team can take for psychological preparation for a disaster. You can use this guidance for inspiration when considering what activities your practice team can undertake to ensure that they are psychologically prepared for an emergency.
