Identifying emergency response plan activation triggers

      1. Identifying emergency response plan activation triggers

Module 1 – Prevention and preparedness | Identifying emergency response plan activation triggers

Once you have identified emergencies and events that may impact your practice, pinpoint specific triggers that will help your team to understand when to activate your emergency plan.

Your triggers will depend on:

  • your practice’s location and mode of operation,
  • the nature of the event, and
  • advice coming from your local emergency services agencies.

Your triggers should be clear, measurable and suited to your unique practice.

Examples of emergency response plan activation triggers include:

  • the activation of your local PHN’s disaster plan,
  • the activation of a specific warning level by local emergency services, or
  • a designated team member’s (e.g. your Emergency Coordinator’s) confirmation that there is a risk of threat that requires emergency response plan activation.

Take action

  • Add a section to your emergency response plan that clearly states your emergency response plan activation triggers. An example of what this may look like can be found below.
    • Trigger information should sit at the beginning of your emergency response plan, making it quick and easy to refer to.
  • Consider printing hard copies of your emergency plan activation triggers and placing them in useful places for your team to see, such as at reception and in any team member break areas.
