Module 1 – Prevention and preparedness | Emergency kit

In an emergency, your practice may become isolated for days or weeks, depending on road and other infrastructure damage.

Ensure that a generous number of critical supplies are stored onsite. Gather and/or purchase appropriate resources and equipment to build an emergency kit that can be used by practice team members in the event of an emergency.

Your kit could include:

  • Disinfectant
  • Detergent
  • First aid kit
  • Doctor’s bag
  • Small and large plastic bags
  • Duct tape
  • Bottles of clean water
  • Non-perishable food items
  • Medical certificate pad
  • Prescription pad
  • Backup data on USB or external drive (if relevant)
  • Practice assets register
  • Building floor plan
  • Hard copy of your practice’s business continuity plan
  • Battery-powered radio (including spare batteries)
  • Torches, including spare batteries
  • Fully charged mobile phone(s), power bank(s) and charger(s)
  • Fire extinguisher with instructions
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Small supply of office stationery
  • Spare keys for your premises (and rooms, storage etc. If applicable)
  • Hard copy of your practice’s insurance policies
  • Latest stock and equipment inventory
  • A copy of your key contacts list (team members, suppliers and essential services)
  • Hard copy of practice’s emergency response plan

Take action

  • Create an emergency kit containing resources and equipment that can be used by your team in the event of an emergency. An example of what this could look like can be found below.
  • Develop a contents checklist for your emergency kit.
    • Print a copy of this checklist to keep within your emergency kit.
    • Compare the items on the checklist to the contents of your emergency kit every three months. Replace any missing or expired items.
