We made medicines cheaper with 60-day dispensing

RACGP Membership > RACGP Membership 2023-24 > We made medicines cheaper with 60-day dispensing

We successfully advocated for 60-day dispensing – halving the cost of medicines for patients, in a change recommended by the Pharmacy Benefits Advisory Committee in two separate reports, the first in 2018.

  • It’s expected to save patients up to $180 a year, and more for people taking multiple medicines.
  • It will mean fewer trips to pick up medicines and repeat scripts, and free up GP appointments.
  • The change brings Australia into line with New Zealand, the UK, France and Canada, where patients already have access to multiple month medications on a single prescription.

Much more achieved for GPs in 2022

Strengthening Medicare Taskforce

We played a key role as the voice for GPs in the government’s Strengthening Medicare Taskforce. The Taskforce began work in July 2022 and the RACGP continued to push throughout the five meetings of the Taskforce for primary care reforms that will improve patient access to general practice, make primary care more affordable, and reduce pressure on hospitals.

The Taskforce’s Report contained many promising elements, which we called for, including longer consultations and increased investment in multidisciplinary care in general practice – to meet the needs of 21st century patient care.

Rural and remote members

We represented GPs in the Senate Inquiry into the provision of general practitioner and related primary health services to outer metropolitan, rural and regional Australians. Our calls for increased Medicare rebates and measures to boost the general practice workforce were reflected in the positive recommendations in the Interim Report.
