We strengthened the GP workforce by smoothing the path for IMGs

RACGP Membership > RACGP Membership 2023-24 > We strengthened the GP workforce by smoothing the path for IMGs

A strong GP workforce is essential for a healthy Australia, and international medical graduates make up a valuable part of our workforce and contribute to communities across our nation every day.

The RACGP is proud of its global reach and role to train and support GPs to deliver quality care across Australia. Our members originate from more than 100 different countries and more than 35% of our members obtained their medical degree overseas.

Our advocacy is continuing to smooth the path for IMGs to work and live in Australia. We’ve secured:

Much more achieved for GPs in 2022

Strengthening Medicare Taskforce

We played a key role as the voice for GPs in the government’s Strengthening Medicare Taskforce. The Taskforce began work in July 2022 and the RACGP continued to push throughout the five meetings of the Taskforce for primary care reforms that will improve patient access to general practice, make primary care more affordable, and reduce pressure on hospitals.

The Taskforce’s Report contained many promising elements, which we called for, including longer consultations and increased investment in multidisciplinary care in general practice – to meet the needs of 21st century patient care.

Rural and remote members

We represented GPs in the Senate Inquiry into the provision of general practitioner and related primary health services to outer metropolitan, rural and regional Australians. Our calls for increased Medicare rebates and measures to boost the general practice workforce were reflected in the positive recommendations in the Interim Report.
