We’re fighting for a national payroll tax solution

We know payroll tax is a concern for many of our members. And we’re fighting it.

  • The RACGP has pushed all major states over the line with various concessions to address payroll tax, including New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Queensland. The work doesn’t stop here – now we’re negotiating a national approach to payroll tax that provides the best solution for practices, patients and communities.
  • We secured crucial legislative changes and commitments exempting GPs from retrospective payroll tax in New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Queensland and the Australian Capital Territory.
  • In Queensland, our advocacy secured a new tax ruling clarifying that patients' fees paid directly to a GP for their services will not be subject to payroll tax.
  • Western Australia confirmed it doesn’t intend to change its current payroll tax provisions to get more from GPs.
  • We launched public-facing campaigns which got substantial mainstream media attention and support from politicians in many states, including Victoria, South Australia, New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory.
  • Our advocacy resulted in Federal Health Minister Mark Butler strongly urging state treasurers, premiers and treasurers to listen to GP bodies about how the issue can be resolved for practice owners and GPs.
