Our advocacy wins

We are a strong voice on state-based advocacy

RACGP Membership > RACGP Membership Renewal > We are a strong voice on state-based advocacy

We continue to strengthen our state-based advocacy to ensure State Government health policies are supporting general practice and improving the health of Australians.

Some of our recent successes include:

  • A successful Tasmanian election campaign saw all sides of politics commit to several planks from our election platform. The Tasmanian faculty is working with the Tasmanian Government on incentives for junior doctors to train as GPs in the state, a new Mothers and Babies service and the establishment of a new GP specialist service for children living with ADHD.
  • In Queensland, the Faculty secured funding to reimburse GPs for expert advice provided to Government committees, inquiries and consultation processes.
  • Strong advocacy in Western Australia, New South Wales and Queensland helped expanded access the RSV vaccine.
  • The Victorian Government’s new Victorian GP Training Grant program, supporting more junior doctors to train in the state, kicked off.

GPs@Parliament

In March hosted the second edition of its flagship GPs@Parliament at Federal Parliament in Canberra. 18 GPs and 7 staff met with more than 90 MPs and Senators including Health Minister Mark Butler, Assistant Minister for Health and Aged Care Ged Kearney, Assistant Minister for Rural and Regional Health Emma McBride,  Leader of the Opposition Peter Dutton, Greens Health spokesperson Senator Jordon Steele-John and many others.

Much more achieved for GPs in 2023

Strengthening Medicare Taskforce

We played a key role as the voice for GPs in the government’s Strengthening Medicare Taskforce. The Taskforce began work in July 2022 and the RACGP continued to push throughout the five meetings of the Taskforce for primary care reforms that will improve patient access to general practice, make primary care more affordable, and reduce pressure on hospitals.

The Taskforce’s Report contained many promising elements, which we called for, including longer consultations and increased investment in multidisciplinary care in general practice – to meet the needs of 21st century patient care.

Rural and remote members

We represented GPs in the Senate Inquiry into the provision of general practitioner and related primary health services to outer metropolitan, rural and regional Australians. Our calls for increased Medicare rebates and measures to boost the general practice workforce were reflected in the positive recommendations in the Interim Report.
