Our advocacy wins

We backed GPs on all regulation and compliance matters

RACGP Membership > RACGP Membership Renewal > We backed GPs on all regulation and compliance matters

We know compliance and regulation is a key concern for our member GPs.

Our advocacy is continuing to reduce administrative and regulatory burdens, so you can get on with the job you love.

  • We meet regularly with the Department of Health and Aged Care and the Professional Services Review to raise our members’ concerns, and advocate for appropriate targeting of compliance activities and a more educative approach to compliance.
  • We pushed back strongly against changes to the assignment of benefit process for bulk billed telehealth consultations. And secured a commitment from Minister Butler that compliance activities won’t be undertaken while this matter is investigated. The RACGP made a formal submission to DoHAC on ways to simplify and modernise the assignment of benefit process for all types of consultations, with legislative reforms now being considered.
  • We continue to advocate for improvements to Ahpra’s processes to ensure transparency and fairness and reduce red tape. We’ve made submissions on topics such as health practitioners’ criminal history and the management of professional misconduct
  • Following on from the release of the final report from the Review of Medicare Integrity and Compliance, which found the majority of Medicare leakage stems from non-compliance errors rather than deliberate fraud, we met with DoHAC’s Medicare Integrity Taskforce. And we’ll be contributing feedback on new learning resources aimed at preventing Medicare billing errors.
  • We continue to provide education and support to help members better understand Medicare and reduce their risk of non-compliance. This includes delivering webinars with DoHAC and the PSR, presentations on compliance at RACGP conferences, and a module on the MBS and compliance available through gplearning

Much more achieved for GPs in 2023

Strengthening Medicare Taskforce

We played a key role as the voice for GPs in the government’s Strengthening Medicare Taskforce. The Taskforce began work in July 2022 and the RACGP continued to push throughout the five meetings of the Taskforce for primary care reforms that will improve patient access to general practice, make primary care more affordable, and reduce pressure on hospitals.

The Taskforce’s Report contained many promising elements, which we called for, including longer consultations and increased investment in multidisciplinary care in general practice – to meet the needs of 21st century patient care.

Rural and remote members

We represented GPs in the Senate Inquiry into the provision of general practitioner and related primary health services to outer metropolitan, rural and regional Australians. Our calls for increased Medicare rebates and measures to boost the general practice workforce were reflected in the positive recommendations in the Interim Report.
