We’re fighting to stop the Patient Tax

RACGP Membership > RACGP Membership Renewal > We’re fighting to stop the Patient Tax

We know payroll tax is a concern for many of our members. And we’re fighting it.

  • The RACGP has pushed all major states over the line with various concessions to address payroll tax, including New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, ACT, and Queensland. The work doesn’t stop here – now we’re negotiating a national approach to payroll tax that provides the best solution for practices, patients and communities.
  • We secured crucial legislative changes and commitments to no retrospective payroll tax liabilities secured from several jurisdictions in the form of amnesties/temporary exemptions in New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Australian Capital Territory, and Queensland.
  • Amnesties were secured in several states including Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia, Australian Capital Territory and Queensland. However, as exemptions are in place in these jurisdictions, the amnesties have, or are soon due, to expire.
  • In Queensland, our advocacy secured a new tax ruling clarifying that patients' fees paid directly to a GP for their services will not be subject to payroll tax.
  • Western Australia confirmed it doesn’t intend to change its current payroll tax provisions to get more from GPs.
  • We launched public-facing campaigns which gathered over 20,000 signatures, attracting substantial mainstream media attention and support from politicians in many states, including Victoria, South Australia, New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory.
  • Our advocacy resulted in Federal Health Minister Mark Butler strongly urging state treasurers and premiers to listen to peak GP bodies about how the issue can be resolved for practice owners and GPs.
  • The team continues to monitor activities in other jurisdictions closely.
