The opioid crisis in Australia continues to grow, with increasing rates of dependence, overdose and harm. There is an urgent need for skilled prescribers to deliver safe and evidence-based treatment. This training offers a pathway to MATOD (Medication Assisted Treatment for Opioid Dependence) accreditation, with the Victorian Department of Health, for General Practitioners, Medical and Nurse Practitioners, who are working in Victoria. This training also supports practitioners to build confidence in the management of Opioid Use Disorder (OUD), and in the provision opioid dependence care.

The webinar begins with an update on Specialist Care Reform in Victoria, covering the reform program, emerging ideas, and changes to the Statewide Referral Criteria to support smoother referral pathways. This will be presented by Prof Ben Thomson, Victorian Chief Surgical Advisor. Next is a Syphilis Update, including local epidemiology, best practice diagnosis and management, and updated maternal screening recommendations. This will be presented by Dr Dilanka Hettiarachchi, Public Health Medicine Registrar and GP, and Dr Christian McGrath, Victorian Deputy Chief Health Officer.

Benzodiazepines and Z-drugs (i.e., Zopiclone and Zolpidem) play a valuable role in the short-term management of anxiety and insomnia, but long-term use is associated with dependence, cognitive impairment, falls, and other harms. Despite their risks, deprescribing these medications in general practice can be challenging. In this 60-minute session, we will translate the internationally recognised Maudsley Deprescribing Guidelines into actionable strategies for everyday general practice. Participants will learn the core principles of Maudsley deprescribing, including hyperbolic tapering and personalised reduction strategies, and gain practical skills to identify suitable patients and how to safely initiate tapering.
