Tongue, lip and cheek ties

This webinar provides a concise, evidence-based overview of tongue, lip, and buccal ties in infants, delivered from an ENT perspective. It will focus on assessment of oral restrictions, their functional impact, and appropriate management pathways.
Key topics include:
• Clinical presentation and functional impact on feeding, growth, and maternal symptoms
• Differentiating normal anatomical variation from clinically significant restriction
• Structured approach to assessment, including history and examination
• Indications for conservative management versus surgical intervention
• Referral pathways and multidisciplinary care (including ENT involvement)
• Risks, benefits, and expected outcomes of procedures
• Common pitfalls, including overdiagnosis and unnecessary intervention
Designed for primary care clinicians, this session aims to support accurate assessment, reduce variability in care, and promote safe, evidence-based management aligned with current clinical guidance.
Learning outcomes
- Apply a structured, evidence-based approach to assessment of tongue, lip, and buccal ties, recognising normal variation and identifying when restriction is clinically significant, consistent with Australian ENT and Paediatric Guidelines.
- Discuss indications for intervention versus conservative management, including when referral to ENT is appropriate, to support safe, functional outcomes and avoid unnecessary procedures.

Dr Kavita Thanakrishnan

Dr Kavita is passionate about supporting families through the early years of parenthood. Before becoming a GP, she was a Paedaitric Trainee in the Sydney Children’s Hospital Network for 6 years, including regional and urban units and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the Royal Hospital for Women. She also holds a Diploma in Child Health from UNSW.
She has a special interest in the feeding journey of new babies and parents and is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) and member of the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine. She is also a NDC (Possums) practitioner and Thompson Method Practitioner. Kavita is current Chair of Breastfeeding and Lactation Medicine Specific Interests Group.

Dr Megan Hobson
Ear, Nose and Throat Surgeon
r Hobson completed a Bachelor of Medical Science at the University of Sydney and a Bachelor of Medicine at the University of Newcastle. She trained in General Surgery before sub-specialising in Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery.
Dr Hobson completed fellowship training in Paediatric ENT and Head and Neck Surgery and now works at the Children’s Hospital Westmead specialising in paediatric Head and Neck surgery. Her other area of interest is the collaborative management of Obstructive Sleep Apnoea in children.
