This instalment of the Rural Health Webinar Series will explore practical techniques that rural GPs can use to engage patients in discussions about their health and collaborate on goals.
GP participants will learn about the core concepts of Motivational Interviewing and practice basic skills. Using cases from general practice, participants will gain an understanding of the 3 key processes – collaboration, language pattern recognition and eliciting a person’s own motivation for change.
Resources for further study will be provided.
- Recognise and respond appropriately to change talk and sustain talk
- Work collaboratively and evoke change talk
- Recognise and manage ambivalence and discord in the consultation

Dr Monica Moore, a medical practitioner with a psychotherapy practice in Sutherland and a passion for sharing the insights of psychology with clinicians working in primary health care. She has been teaching counselling skills to GPs, psychologists and allied health clinicians since 2000, and is in the unique position of being able to combine over 20 years of experience in general practice with expertise in a range of counselling modalities.
