Medical Abortion in General Practice: Clinical Update and Practical Guidance for GPs

This webinar provides GPs with a concise, evidence-based overview of early medical abortion (EMA) in general practice. It will explore the clinical context of unplanned pregnancy and the importance of non-directive, patient-centred counselling, alongside the legal framework for abortion care in Victoria, including obligations relating to conscientious objection.
Participants will gain practical guidance on providing medical abortion, including models of care, available training and resources, and patient selection. Key topics include contraindications, management of complications, referral pathways (including surgical services), and post-abortion contraception.
The session will also highlight holistic care considerations such as screening for reproductive coercion, supporting mental health, and building GP capability through education and training.

Dr Sara Whitburn
Chair, RACGP Sexual Health Medicine Specific Interest Group and Medical Director, Sexual Health Victoria
Dr Sara Whitburn (she/her) is the Medical Director at Sexual Health Victoria and the Chair of the Sexual Health Special Interest Group of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners. She was awarded her RACGP fellowship in 2009. Sara has diplomas in Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Family Planning and a Graduate Certificate in Clinical Teaching. Sara completed a 6-month Academic GP registrar term and has worked in general practices and family planning clinics in the UK and Melbourne. She has specialised in Sexual and Reproductive Health since 2008 and is interested in genital health, menopause, and long-acting contraceptive provision and training in general practice.
Dr Karen Freilich
Dr Karen Freilich (she/her) is a General Practitioner and a Sexual Medicine Specialist at Monash Health's Sexual Medicine & Therapy Clinic in Melbourne, Australia. Karen is a passionate advocate for sexual and reproductive health rights, and is a proud provider of medical abortion, contraception, sexual medicine therapy, and gender affirming care. Karen has completed a Masters of Reproductive and Sexual Health Research in London (LSHTM) and completed training through European Society of Sexual Medicine (ESSM) School in Budapest. In 2022, Karen was awarded the RACGP Australian Registrar of the Year Award. Karen was an Academic GP Registrar at Monash University researching contraception and abortion provision in rural Australia. Karen currently lectures and tutors Sexual Health through University of Melbourne's Medical School.
