This webinar series presented by RACGP Specific Interests in collaboration with Dementia Training Australia, talk to specialists in a conversational interview understanding several important topics in dementia. 

This second webinar will discuss the focus on the landscape of Alzheimer’s disease research specifically but may also talk about other research areas of interest. Head of the Neurosciences program at St Vincent’s Centre for Applied Medical Research, and the director of the Peter Duncan Neurosciences Uni, Professor Bruce Brew will be interviewed about research into treatments for dementia, what sort of treatments are undergoing trials – and how to access these trials for your patients, along with what are the different areas of research that are currently being investigated.
 
Professor Brew who is actively involved in trials and research will also talk about the importance of research to improve treatment for people living with dementia, wow to get people involved in trials and what are the research areas of focus at the current time.

Learning outcomes

  1. Outline the role of research in developing our understanding of disease treatments.
  2. Explain how patients can access trials for research into dementia.
  3. Describe the types of research targets for drugs in Australia in relation to Alzheimer’s Disease.

Dr Stephanie Daly
GP Educator, Dementia Training Australia

Dr Steph Daly is a specialist GP in Dementia. She is a fellow of the Royal College of General Practitioners and has completed post-graduate training in Dementia Studies at the University of Bradford in the UK. More recently since moving to Australia she has become an advocate for patients living with Dementia and has facilitated the practice she works at becoming one of the first dementia-friendly (Dementia Australia approved) GP surgery’s in Australia.

Professor Bruce Brew AM
Neurologist, St Vincent's Hospital Sydney

Professor Bruce Brew AM is a highly experienced neurologist with a particular interest in dementia, neurological complications of immune deficiencies, and infections of the nervous system. Prof Bruce Brew is Head of the Neurosciences Program at St Vincent's Centre for Applied Medical Research, and the Director of the Peter Duncan Neurosciences Unit St Vincent's Centre for Applied Medical Research. He is also involved in teaching and holds appointments as a Conjoint Professor at the University of New South Wales and Professor at the University of Notre Dame.

Dr Peter Silberberg
Medical educator – Dementia Training Australia

Dr Peter Silberberg is an experienced GP, GP Supervisor and medical educator. He joined Dementia Training Australia as a medical educator in 2022. He has worked in many primary health sectors and currently works as a GP as the lead clinician at Rekindling The Spirit Health Service in Lismore (AMS) and as a GP at Lennox Head Medical Centre.
