Kava and its adverse effects for general practitioners

Webinar 28 Jul, 7:30 PM - 8:30 PM (AEST)

Have you ever had a patient with suspected poisoning and didn’t know what to do or who to call? Have you called the poisons information centre for one of your patients, got some advice but didn’t know the reasons behind the recommendations? Are you aware of the pilot commercial kava importation scheme which commenced on 1 December 2021, and wondering what to advise your patients? Do you know that kava interacts with other medications, and can have impacts on road safety? If you’re wondering about any of these questions, then this webinar is for you.

Learning outcomes

  1. Discuss kava, its traditional use, pharmacology, potential health effects and road safety concerns, investigations and clinical management
  2. Be aware of the recent change allowing commercial kava importation into Australia, its impacts and respective Commonwealth program evaluation and NSW kava monitoring and surveillance
  3. Discuss kava poisonings with potential drug interactions, risk assessment and clinical management through general practice and case consultation to NSW Poisons Information Centre
  4. Be aware of useful toxicology resources, including 24/7 clinical toxicology specialist consultations through the Poisons Information Centre.
