Join Assoc. Prof Rowena Ivers, University of Wollongong and Dr Chris Barton, Monash University as they discuss the followng topics:

  • What is research, for the purposes of ethical review in Australia?
  • Foundations and theory underpinning ethical review and oversight of research In Australia.
  • Four values underpinning the design, review and conduct of research in Australia.
  • Common ethical issues arising in general practice research in Australia, and strategies to overcome these issues.

Dr Rowena Ivers
FRACGP

Associate Professor Rowena Ivers is a general practice academic based at the University of Wollongong. She has worked for 35 years as a GP and has also been involved in research for 25 years, in prevention, tobacco control, alcohol and nutrition as well as cancer prevention, including in the area of Aboriginal health. A/Prof is experienced in several methodologies in qualitative research, quantitative research and has been involved in one project using large data sets. She currently serves on the RACGP National Research and Evaluation Ethics Committee.

Dr Chris Barton PhD, MMedSci, BSc
Senior Lecturer

Dr Barton commenced his current university position in 2017. He leads research training programs, including short term scholarship students, honours, and PhD students, as well as Academic Post registrars. He oversees delivery of a research training 'activity package' for the RACGP to GP academic registrars participating in Academic Posts and contributed to the development of the RACGP research curriculum and syllabus unit. An active researcher, he has published more than 90 papers addressing issues broadly across the fields of primary health care and public health, primary care research methods and ethics, and respiratory medicine and recently contributed to papers and a book chapter on ethical considerations for research in Australian general practice.
