Emerging drug trends: Counterfeit alprazolam and nitrous oxide use in young people – Recognition and management strategies

This webinar will provide GPs with an update on the prevalence and use patterns of counterfeit alprazolam and nitrous oxide in young people. It will provide GPs with the skills to screen for benzodiazepine and nitrous oxide use, provide brief interventions and discuss treatment options including referral of patients into treatment where appropriate.

Learning outcomes

  1. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the recent evolving drug trends in young people.
  2. Review screening questionnaires and learn tips/techniques to elicit substance use history from young patients.
  3. Recognise and understand the effects and side effects of nitrous oxide and counterfeit alprazolam products, the risks and safety issues and how patients may present in general practice.
  4. Develop skills using brief interventions for young people with benzodiazepine and nitrous oxide use in general practice, and understand when and where to refer.
  5. Discuss the rationale and fundamentals of treatment for patients with toxicity from nitrous oxide use.
