Refugee health: Paediatrics

On-demand recorded 24 Sep 2020

This webinar explores the role of the GP in the care of paediatric refugees.

Global refugee numbers are at an all-time high and over half are children. Engagement with available child healthcare services is often underutilised, despite significantly elevated rates of physiological and psychological health issues.

This webinar explores navigating the care of refugee children in relation to:

  • The initial assessment and what it involves
  • Common conditions and their management
  • Nutritional deficiencies in children
  • Physical and social development ranges
  • The use of interpreter services

Learning outcomes

  1. Develop a checklist to ensure the initial assessment of a refugee child is comprehensive, taking into account factors that may influence physical and developmental parameters
  2. Identify conditions common in refugee children and appropriate investigations in their identification
  3. Discuss the possible outcomes of low immunisation rates in refugee children susceptible to vaccine preventable diseases, identifying differences in developing country’s immunisation schedules and the importance of catch-up vaccinations with adequate follow-up for course completion
  4. Outline resources and support services available to both practitioners and refugee families.
