'Mental bites' webinar series - What is a GP mental health specialist?

On-demand recorded 3 Mar 2022

‘Mental bites’ is a new lunch-time series with bite-sized information presented by the Psychological Medicine Specific Interest group. GPs are aware of mental health assessments, diagnosis, and management, but this series will be an opportunity to learn more about how to do the work - the micro-skills of engagement, forming safe and effective therapeutic alliances and communication with patients. In this series of short lunchtime sessions, the webinars will aim to focus deeply on important aspects of being a good enough therapist. Each webinar will be facilitated by RACGPSI Psychological Medicine Chair, Dr Cathy Andronis and have a guest GP or expert who has proficient experience in this area. The webinars may be of interest to those who wish to take part in further FPS skills training in the future.

The first webinar of the series will include a discussion of the micro-skills of mental health counselling, including the process of assessment and treatment, for optimising patient outcomes. What do expert GPs do in sessions and how can GPs build skills and confidence as therapists and focused psychological strategy providers.
