Breast Implants: A guide for GPs
On-demand recorded 1 Jul 2020
This 1 hour interactive webinar provides an opportunity for GPs to improve their knowledge, skills and confidence in being able to provide clinical advise, reassure and/or work up of patients with problems related to their breast implants. It will be co-presented by Dr. Ashlea Broomfield, a General Practitioner with a long history of championing Women's health and Professor Anand Deva, who has researched these devices for over 2 decades. The history of these devices, their clinical use and regulatory action will be summarised. Finally, the webinar will also provide the latest update on the emerging problem of Breast implant associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL), and its epidemiology and risk in Australia.
- Discuss the various clinical uses for breast implants and their indications for both cosmetic and reconstructive surgery
- Summarise clinically detectable adverse events associated with breast implants and their relative incidence over time, their relative urgency and the best pathways for work up and/or referral
- Be aware of the history of these devices, regulatory action and the latest recommendations for ongoing surveillance
- Assess a patient with breast implants in situ and advise a patient about medium to long-term risks associated with these devices.
