Approaching Patient Conversations About AOD Use

This webinar will focus on talking to your patients about their alcohol and other drug use, how to feel confident asking, assessing, giving advice and assisting your patients to make decisions about what they want and need and all in a usual GP consult.
We will also be including skill-building in motivational interviewing & brief interventions
- Demonstrate their skills and confidence opening conversations with patients about alcohol and other drugs to engage in a non-confrontational conversation that helps to build patients self-efficacy
- Describe how to obtain a comprehensive alcohol and other drug history and risk assessment
- Discuss how language affects rapport
- Be aware how to use motivational interviewing skills to help consolidate patient desire for change

Dr Hester Wilson
Dr Hester Wilson is a GP, addiction specialist and Chair of the RACGP’s Specific Interests Addiction Medicine network.
Hester has many years’ experience working with people with addiction issues in both general practice and specialist settings. She also works in a public Drug and Alcohol Service in South East Sydney Local Health District. She is a Conjoint Lecturer and PhD candidate, School of Public Health and Community Medicine, University of New South Wales, NSW.
