Preventing subsequent events in patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) – OPTIMISING THERAPY

This webinar is the second of a series of three webinars focussing on preventing subsequent events in patients with ASCVD. The webinars will progress through the topics of Identify, Optimise, and Review to educate GPs to proactively identify high-risk patients for secondary prevention. Patients with ASCVD such as patients with a history of acute coronary syndrome, stroke, and/or coronary revascularisation are at highest risk of a subsequent event and are candidates for secondary prevention. Participants will be educated on modifiable risk factors such as cholesterol, blood pressure, and diabetes including appropriate targets from national and international guidelines.

This webinar focuses on optimising therapy.

Learning outcomes

Appreciate the urgency to optimise treatment in patients with ASCVD at high-risk of recurrent events
Identify the available therapeutic agents to intensify therapy to meet treatment targets in accordance with national and international guidelines
Proactively refer patients to specialists for shared-care if all reasonable efforts to optimise and intensify therapy fail to achieve guideline-recommended targets

Dr Trish Kahawita

Trish is a new GP fellow who is passionate about digital health, medical education, and doctor wellbeing. She has been practicing medicine for the last ten years and has worked all around Australia, in both urban and remote areas. Her main clinical interests include Women's and Children's Health, Mental Health, Neurology, Geriatrics/Palliative Care, and Tropical Medicine. Trish works as a medical educator for GP Synergy as well as being a community Palliative Care GP. She also volunteers as a peer support facilitator for junior doctors. She is excited about the future of primary care and the use of innovative health technologies.

Professor Len Kritharides

Professor Len Kritharides is an academic cardiologist with clinical and research interests in preventing and treating heart disease, including patients with cancer, muscular dystrophy and hyperlipidaemia (high cholesterol). He completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Melbourne, trained in Cardiology at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, and undertook a PhD and post doctoral studies in in cell biology and lipid biochemistry at the Heart Research Institute, University of Sydney, and at the Medical College of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, USA. He has practised as a general and interventional cardiologist, and is Senior Staff Specialist Cardiologist Concord Hospital, and Clinical Director of the Cardiovascular Stream of the Sydney Local Health District. He is Head of the Atherosclerosis and Vascular Biology Research Laboratories at the ANZAC Research Institute, and Professor in Medicine at the University of Sydney.
