Activity 4 – Setting fees and building your fee list

(1.0 hour RP, 1.0 hour MO)

Welcome to the measuring outcomes activity on setting and building your fee list.

This activity will help GPs and practice owners to identify their most billed items, determine the appropriate fees to charge and build a fee list. Using your billing report from your practice software and the MBS online tool, you will create and build your fee list.

This activity is part of the Optimising your billing strategy CPD solution and can be completed as a standalone activity.

Service fees make a significant contribution to the viability of your practice, whether as an individual GP or at a practice level. You need to consider what is a fair and equitable fee for the services you provide.

Take some time to consider where you might introduce or adjust your fees or arrangements. The RACGP’s General Practice Business Toolkit outlines some further points you may wish to consider when determining your fees.

Question: What are some things that you will now take into consideration when adjusting your fees?

Your most billed MBS items

To determine this your most billed MBS items, you may want to run a billing report from your practice software.

If you have completed Activity 2: Understand your practice costs and identify current billing arrangements, you can consider your patients and services identified in the mini audit.

Once you have identified your most regularly used item numbers, you can use the MBS online tool to search for relevant MBS item numbers and create, download, and print your own custom lists. This video provides guidance on how you can create your own list.

The MBS tool allows you to enter your own fee for each general practice service. It will automatically calculate the patient out-of-pocket contribution based on the MBS rebate.
