Mental Health: Online support

Around half of the Australian population will experience a mental health issue in their lifetime. With the continuing evolution of digital technologies, it is hoped that the online delivery of mental health information, care and services can reach a much greater audience.

e-Mental health, as the area of healthcare is known, can include instant messaging or video-based counselling services, information portals, support groups and forums, online tools or therapeutic programs.

‘e-Mental health can mean a lot of things in medicine,’ Dr Caroline Johnson, Clinical Lead for Mental Health on the RACGP Expert Committee for Quality Care, told Good Practice. ‘In its broad scope, basically anything for which you use the internet or electrical technologies that help you with your mental health could be called e-mental health.’
