The 2024 RACGP placement evaluation received responses from over 2300 supervisors, practice managers, registrars, and operations staff, providing a comprehensive overview of satisfaction with the AGPT placement process and highlighting areas for improvement.
Overall satisfaction with the process has continued to rise, increasing by 6% for the 2025.1 placement cycle. Registrars and practice managers reported the highest levels of satisfaction, with the overall satisfaction for registrars, practice managers and supervisors combined being 62%.
What you’ve told us is working well
-
The TMS system is now easier to use, with improved reliability and enhanced functionality for applications, communications, and offer management.
-
Communication is clearer and more timely, and the support provided by RACGP staff continues to be valued.
-
Timely notifications have improved the overall experience.
-
Over 80% of registrars secured placements in their preferred practices.
Where you’d like us to continue our efforts
In addition to these gains, the survey identified areas of opportunity for us to focus our efforts. These included the issues below.
-
There was some confusion regarding actual training site capacity.
-
Information on capacity caps was sometimes unclear, with limited time for follow-up questions before applications and interviews commenced.
-
The placement timeline, particularly the hiatus period, remains a source of confusion.
-
There is a need for greater awareness about the option to secure 12-month placements.
Actions underway
In response, we've implemented targeted improvements for the 2025.2 placement process and will continue to refine these for future cycles. These include:
-
providing clearer, earlier communication of capacity allocations. For 2025.2, the timeline was extended between capacity confirmation and the opening of applications and interviews, allowing training sites more time to clarify capacity cap questions.
-
increasing visibility of continuing placements in the TMS, so registrars have a more accurate picture of training site capacity. For the 2025.2 placement process, the TMS was updated with continuing placement information.
-
updating resources and educational materials to better explain the hiatus period and clarify the intent and timing in future placement cycles. This is planned for the 2026 placement cycle.
-
promoting greater awareness of the ability to sign a 12-month contract.
