Like any other consult - history, examination, investigation, treatment, and management are crucial in the GPs role in supporting and providing high quality care to women during their pre-conception, pregnancy and post-partum journey. Care of older people
There is growing recognition of the different mental health issues and requirements facing women. Prof Kulkarni believes women’s mental health is different from men’s needs due to biopsychosocial factors yet there is a paucity of research looking specifically at women. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in women is an example that has been widely reported in the media recently and hence GPs are reporting a significant increase in patient inquiries. However, work force issues mean timely diagnosis and treatment from specialist services is difficult to get and expensive for patients. General Practice is well placed to diagnose and manage ADHD however this is work in progress.
