In Practice: Demystifying Medicare
The RACGP has prepared responses to a broad range of questions around the MBS, which members can access via the college website.
The RACGP has prepared written responses to questions submitted by attendees of the Demystifying Medicare session at the 2023 Practice Owners National Conference.
This week’s In Practice also includes information on how members can provide input to an upcoming review into general practice incentive programs, a workshop on engaging with violent patients, and summer preparedness resources.
Q&A: Demystifying Medicare
The RACGP has prepared written responses to questions submitted by attendees of the Demystifying Medicare session at the 2023 Practice Owners National Conference.
This session was presented by Dr Robert Menz and Mr Brett McPherson.
Given the extensive interest in the MBS, presenters were unable to answer all questions during the session due to limited time, and written responses have been prepared with their input. The resource has also been reviewed by the Department of Health and Aged Care.
The questions cover a broad range of MBS topics including:
- chronic disease management
- dermatology
- co-claiming
- mental health
- Medicare compliance.
Responses have been grouped together under common themes for ease of reading.

General Practice Incentives Review: Have your say

The Department of Health and Aged Care has engaged KPMG to undertake an
Effectiveness review of General Practice Incentives across Australia. The review will assess the effectiveness and impact of the existing incentives program and identify solutions to enhance the current general practice incentives as a funding model in the future.
The RACGP is seeking insight and feedback from members on how current incentive programs impact them, their practice, and patients. This Q&A webinar provides the opportunity to influence the shape of the primary healthcare system.

- Provide an overview of the Effectiveness Review of General Practice Incentives
- Provide an overview of current and incoming incentives
- Discuss the issues and opportunities the RACGP has identified to date
- Provide attendees an opportunity to share views with the panel through Q&A, chat and polls

RACGP Summer Planning Toolkit
Recent updates to the
Summer Planning Toolkit are designed to help general practices consider summer preparedness activities that can implemented for the health and safety of patients and practice teams.
The resource uses a modular structure and includes information on emergency preparedness, epidemics and chronic disease, as well as advice on keeping patients safe and healthy during summer.
Department of Health Victoria and RACGP Victoria webinar series
Wednesday 13 December, 6.00 – 7.00 pm (AEDT)
December’s topic is the Department of Health’s Planned Surgery Reform Blueprint, in particular primary care’s role in driving sustainable system reform.
The COVID-19 pandemic had significant impacts on Victoria’s planned surgery system which are still being felt. The blueprint outlines prioritised reforms to drive improved outcomes and experiences for patients, including the enhanced integration of primary care in the peri-operative journey.
Attendees can hear about work the department is undertaking to improve integration of primary care in the peri-operative journey and identify key approaches for GPs to support good peri-operative care of patients.
