Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt believes better support for clinical trials means Australians ‘will have greater access to the world’s best medical breakthroughs’.

The Federal Government said it is committed to developing a new process for organisations and researchers to set up and run clinical trials across Australia, following funding from the 2018–19 Federal Budget.

‘Working with the state and territory governments, we will reduce red tape and end duplication, making it easier to conduct clinical trials in Australia,’ Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt said.

‘This means Australian patients will have greater access to the world’s best medical breakthroughs.’

The 2018–19 Federal Budget included $6 billion in funding for Australia’s health and medical research sector, including $3.5 billion for the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), $2 billion in disbursements from the Medical Research Future Fund, and $500 million from the Biomedical Translation Fund.

Delivery of $248 million to support clinical trials for patients with rare cancers and rare diseases has been implemented, as well as $7 million to support states and territories in redesigning their trial systems in order to make it easier for researchers and companies to conduct clinical trials.

Minister Hunt believes the injection of funding means Australians will ultimately get access to the best medicines, devices and treatments in the world.
