Research Overview

We conduct a range of research activities that directly influence the education and training of GP registrars

The centrepiece of our current research program is the research component of the Registrar Clinical Encounters in Training (ReCEnT) project. This is a cohort study of the in-consultation clinical and educational experience of GP registrars. ReCEnT is conducted across New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia, and South East Queensland, and will continue to be rolled out to the remaining training regions across Australia in the future. Utilising ReCEnT data, our team investigates a range of clinical and educational research topics, enabling the identification of training needs and translation of subsequent evidence-based educational innovations into vocational training of general practitioners.

Our team also conducts research into other aspects of vocational training, including, for example, investigating the use of artificial intelligence technologies by GP registrars and educators, the impact of telehealth on the general practice vocational training model, and the experiences of Australian registrars in teaching roles.

GP Training Research team members also collaborate on research conducted with other academic institutions, examining, for example, psychosocial interventions for GP registrar burnout and wellbeing, the stability of GP practice over time, and educational innovations in antimicrobial stewardship.

We collaborate with Australian and international researchers, and are particularly keen to work with medical educators, supervisors, and registrars (including academic registrars).
