RACGP welcomes free flu jabs for Queenslanders in 2024

The Royal Australian College of GPs (RACGP) has welcomed the Queensland Government’s announcement of free influenza vaccines for all Queenslanders in the 2024 flu season.

RACGP Queensland Chair Dr Bruce Willett applauded the move.

“Vaccination is our best protection against influenza, and the most effective way to prevent deaths and serious illness,” he said.

“The Queensland Government’s early announcement of free flu jabs for everyone next flu season is forward-thinking and sensible policy. It’s much better to be proactive, rather than waiting until the flu season is underway.

“This will improve access to vaccination for people battling cost of living pressures. It will mean more people can get vaccinated overall, and our communities will be better protected.

“Queensland’s free flu program has been very successful, with close to 1 million people getting a jab in 2023 and 2022. Other states and territories should follow Queensland’s lead and make the flu vaccine free for all next year as well.”

The Queensland Chair said it’s important people get the right vaccine for them, and their GP will know what’s best.

“Some people are at higher risk of severe illness, and they are recommended to get a higher dose vaccine. This includes people aged over 65 years,” he said.

“Speak to your GP when the time comes, they will know if you should have a higher dose vaccine.”
