The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) is congratulating this year’s RACGP Foundation award winners.
This year the winners are receiving their awards during the
WONCA World Conference Sydney 2023, which is being hosted by the RACGP – bringing one of the largest global conferences for GPs to Australia for the first time in over 20 years.
Since the 1950s, the RACGP Foundation has supported medical research into primary health care – empowering GPs in discovering new ideas and solutions to advance general practice care in Australia.
RACGP Foundation award winners
- The Peter Mudge Medal went to Prof Jane Gunn for her study, ‘20 years of Diagnosis, Management and Outcomes of Depression in Primary Care (diamond)’. This is awarded annually to a GP who has advanced the discipline of general practice and the goals of the RACGP, and whose original research has the most potential to significantly influence daily general practice.
- The Rhee Family Award for Research in Aged Care went to A/Prof Anthea Dallas for her research, ‘Connecting students and primary healthcare providers to improve quality of RACF care in Tasmania: a mixed-methods study of stakeholder engagement’. This award is being offered for the first time to a GP whose original research has the most potential to significantly influence general practice in aged care.
- The Alan Chancellor Award went to Dr Marguerite Tracy for her research, ‘Healthcare professionals should encourage people to bring question prompt lists - find out why! (Findings from a longitudinal qualitative study)’. This award is presented annually to the GP or GP in training considered to be the best first-time presenter of a research paper at the RACGP annual conference.
- The RACGP Foundation Best Poster Prize went to Dr Javiera Martinez Gutierrez for her presentation of ‘Failure to follow-up abnormal test results associated with cervical cancer in primary care: How are we doing? A systematic review’. This award is presented each year for the best research poster by a GP or GP in training at the RACGP annual conference.
RACGP Board Chair Dr Lara Roeske congratulated this year’s winners.
“I congratulate all our award winners and thank them for their hard work advancing general practice medicine,” she said.
“GP research plays a vital role in ensuring Australia’s general practice system is world class, and responsive to the needs of patients in communities across our nation. And it really needs to be adequately funded to support the job of general practice in keeping people healthy and living their best lives.”
The WONCA 2023 conference theme is “Recovery, reconnection, and revival. A celebration of primary care.” This year’s conference includes more than 800 presentations and workshops from over 700 local and international presenters from around the world, and over 50 topic streams, including health reform, mental health, women’s health, climate change, rural practice, and more.
