RACGP announces Tasmanian GP of the Year and other honourees

Rural general practitioner from Don near Devonport Dr Jane Cooper has been named Tasmanian GP of the Year by The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP).

RACGP Tasmania Chair, Dr Clare Ballingall said Dr Cooper, who works in the rural north-west of the State, was a very worthy recipient of the award.

“Jane has developed a keen interest in working with youth and has recently opened a practice at Don near Devonport to meet the needs of young people’s physical and mental health issues,” Dr Ballingall said.

RACGP Tasmania also presented the Tasmanian General Practice of the Year award to the Launceston Medical Centre (LMC).

LMC is a relatively new practice run by Jerome Muir-Wilson and Jaclyn O’Keefe who have converted an old pub in central city Launceston and created a state-of-the-art practice which provides a broad range of services.

The RACGP Tasmania Friend of the Faculty award was presented to Alan Tucker. This award, unique to RACGP Tasmania, is selected by the Board and staff of the organisation.

“Alan has offered ongoing support to RACGP Tasmania, to general practice, his community and patients that goes far beyond what could be reasonably expected,” Dr Ballingall said.

Alan has been an active GP for 53 years and an RACGP Fellow for 40 years (now a Life Fellow). In recent years he has committed to regular work in aboriginal communities in central Australia.

“Alan is also a prolific collector of Aboriginal art and has kindly gifted several aboriginal paintings to us which we display in the faculty,” Dr Ballingall said.
