Long-serving Western Australian general practitioner Max Kamien has been awarded the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners’ (RACGP) most prestigious honour, the Rose-Hunt Award.
The Rose-Hunt Award is presented to an RACGP fellow or member who has rendered outstanding service in the promotion of the objectives of the RACGP.
Presenting the award on the eve of the RACGP’s GP15 conference in Melbourne, RACGP President Dr Frank R Jones acknowledged Professor Kamien’s longstanding and unwavering contribution to the profession and the RACGP.
“Prof Kamien is a true stalwart of the general practice profession and the RACGP, and I am absolutely delighted to see him presented with the Rose-Hunt Award this evening” said Dr Jones.
“He was one of the Foundation Professors of Community Practice, appointed in 1976 to the University of Western Australia, recognising general practice as a specialty, and underpinning the academic basis of our profession”.
“In his career, Prof Kamien has worn many hats; most recently as RACGP WA Faculty Provost and Corlis Fellow, RACGP National Archivist, as well as an educator, a mentor and a friend to many, an author and storyteller, and an inspiration to many”.
“I don’t believe many GPs could match Max’s untiring support for medical students, general practice registrars and rural doctors, and particularly international medical graduates. Much of his work in recent years has been in supporting international medical graduates in rural communities, in recognition of their isolation and the critical role they play within their communities”.
“Max is to be commended and highly venerated for his dedication and contributions to the RACGP and the profession”.
GP15 – the RACGP’s annual conference for general practice – runs from September 21-23 at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre. Visit the GP15 website for more information.
