Sanity prevails in proposed Medicare shakeup

The new Federal Minister for Health has listened to general practitioners and their patients by rescinding its controversial Medicare changes, which were due to come into effect on Monday.

The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) has  strongly advised against the government’s ill-considered  targeting of general practice patient services with its dedicated ‘You’ve been targeted’ campaign.

As part of the campaign, an online petition was established gaining a staggering 44,000+ signatures from GPs and patients in less than seven days.

Health Minister The Hon. Sussan Ley announced today the proposed changes will not proceed and the government will initiate formal consultations with the general practice community.

RACGP President Dr Frank R Jones said the voice of general practice and its patients has been heard.

“Minister Ley’s commitment to genuinely consult with the community and the profession is very welcome, and I congratulate her,” said Dr Jones.

“Just yesterday I called for the establishment of a GP health reform advisory group consisting of government, patient and GP representatives with a mandate to guide informed consultations with government.

“We look forward to constructive discussion to inform the development of a sustainable and efficient health system that meets the needs of Australia.”

The RACGP is the peak professional body for general practice in Australia representing over 28,500 members working in or towards a career in general practice.
