Not even an apple a day could keep the doctors away from the RACGP annual conference

They say ‘an apple a day keeps the doctor away’ but nothing could keep over 1,200 GPs from converging on Adelaide for the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) annual conference, GP14, which commences today.

Held at the Adelaide Convention Centre on 9–11 October under the theme Lead.Inspire, GP14 celebrates the role of GPs as leaders in the community and their ability to inspire a healthier Australia.

RACGP President, Dr Liz Marles said the conference has broken previous conference attendance records and offers a platform for GPs to discuss issues and advancements in primary healthcare and patient health outcomes.

“With much uncertainty currently surrounding the profession, the conference is an important time for GPs to convene and discuss a range of issues impacting general practice,” said Dr Marles.

“A key discussion that will be held at GP14 is how GPs can lead the debate and inspire communities, governments and health professional colleagues to achieve the best possible patient outcomes.

“GPs are the heart of Australia’s healthcare system and manage a multitude of complex medical conditions and ensure healthy patients remain well through preventive health measures.”

The conference provides delegates with a stimulating program of keynote speakers and the opportunity to strengthen collegial connections.

“GP14 provides GPs with the opportunity to upskill in areas of clinical interest and discuss new and emerging developments in general practice,” said Dr Marles.

“Adelaide is a fantastic setting for GP14 and delegates will have the opportunity to visit some of the city’s most iconic venues including the new South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI) for World Mental Health Day and Adelaide Oval for the inaugural gala dinner.”

“The social program also allows GPs to celebrate the year’s successes and network with colleagues from all around the country.”

Conference highlights include:

  • Dr Andrew Bazemore (USA) - Primary care: what it is and what it can be for the future of health in Australia
  • Professor David Weller (UK) - No longer following but leading: how GP’s changed the landscape in cancer control
  • Dr Jill Benson (AUS) - Breathe in, breathe out. Inspiration and leadership in General Practice
