Australian GPs gather in Adelaide to celebrate general practice research

GPs from around Australia will gather in Adelaide today to celebrate general practice research at the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners’ (RACGP) annual conference, GP14, in Adelaide.

The RACGP is a staunch advocate for primary healthcare research and its important role in improving the quality of care for Australian patients.

RACGP President, Dr Frank Jones said Research Day is an opportunity for the general practice community to come together to discuss important clinical developments in the primary healthcare setting.

“Today’s research-focused program will showcase numerous ground-breaking initiatives emerging from general practice research and highlight the importance of the RACGP’s Foundation research grants,” said Dr Jones.

“Traditionally, medical research has largely been hospital centred, despite the vast majority of illnesses being managed in primary healthcare settings.

“Primary care is the foundation of the Australian healthcare system and much of the evidence general practitioners require can only be obtained from research that directly involves GPs and their patients.

“RACGP research grants acknowledge the vital contribution general practitioners make in furthering medical advancements within the community.”

The GP14 conference program includes nine research presentations from recipients of RACGP Foundation research grants.

“The relevance of RACGP Foundation research grants is demonstrated by the fantastic series of presentations from grant recipients showcased here at GP14,” said Dr Jones.

“General practice research is essential to improving quality of care for Australian patients and ensuring a clinically and cost effective primary healthcare service.

“By participating in this research, GPs can build the evidence base required to deliver the highest quality care and achieve the best health outcomes for all Australians.”

The day kicked off with an early morning RACGP Foundation walk along North Terrace and the scenic River Torrens before beginning the research stream of the conference program at the Adelaide Convention Centre.

The RACGP Foundation was established to support GPs, general practice registrars and students undertaking research in general practice with the goal of improving the health and wellbeing of all Australians.
