RACGP Presidential election candidates announced

The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) Presidential nominations have been announced with five strong candidates vying for the prestigious position of leading the peak body of general practice in Australia.

The RACGP President has a key role of fostering collaboration between RACGP members in line with the best strategic interests of the RACGP, ensuring the aims and objectives of the RACGP are met.

The candidates for the 2014 RACGP President are:

  • Dr Daniel Byrne (South Australia and Northern Territory Faculty)
  • Dr Evan Ackermann (Queensland Faculty)
  • Dr Frank R Jones (Western Australia Faculty)
  • Dr Harry Nespolon (New South Wales and Australia Capital Territory Faculty)
  • Dr Sam Heard (South Australia and Northern Territory Faculty)

The elected candidate will take over the role from current RACGP President, Dr Liz Marles whose 2-year term comes to an end in October.

RACGP President, Dr Liz Marles said the quality of this year’s Presidential candidates suggests a strong future for the RACGP and the general practice profession.

“Following the Federal Budget announcement, we are in the midst of a critical time for the general practice profession and strong leadership is essential if the profession and the patient’s needs are to be appropriately met.

“I encourage all RACGP members to take a strong interest in the election by visiting the website to read the candidate statements and then use their option to vote,” said Dr Marles.

Two nominations were also received for the position of RACGP Registrar Representative. The candidates for this position are:

  • Dr Nina Robertson (New South Wales and Australia Capital Territory Faculty)
  • Dr Paul Tescher (Victoria Faculty)

Dr Mark Miller, recipient of the 2013 RACGP General Practitioner of the Year, has been appointed RACGP Censor-in-Chief.

“Dr Miller is committed to leading the transformation of general practice education and is to be congratulated on his appointment to this esteemed position,” said Dr Marles.

Voting for the positions of RACGP President and Registrar Representative open Monday 16 June and close Friday 11 July.
